Complications From Mirena Birth Control

The Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD) has long been touted as a reversible, long-acting and safe type of birth control. But many women have had debilitating and painful complications when their uterus was perforated or the device migrated.

The allegations in the Mirena lawsuits that have been filed across the country state that Bayer sold the IUD birth control devices without giving potential users information and warnings that adequately described the risk of having these very serious complications.

If you think you may have a claim either for a family member or friend or even for yourself, you can ask for a free claim evaluation and consultation.

COMPLICATIONS OF MIRENA BIRTH CONTROL

Mirena is a type of birth control where a T-shaped device is inserted into the uterus at an office visit with the doctor. The device has a steroid reservoir that gradually releases levonorgestrel which is the contraceptive. The IUD can stay in place for up to five years.

Mirena has been used by more than 2 million women in the United States since it was first introduced in December 2000 and it has steadily risen in popularity.

The warning label on Mirena does not contain a strong enough warning about the severe complications that can arise from its use, especially if the IUD (intrauterine device) migrates out of place or perforates the uterus.

The label on Mirena does say that this migration might happen if the uterus should be perforated at the time insertion but I says this is an event that is “uncommon” and does not state that it is possible to have spontaneous migration or perforation long after the IUD is inserted.

Many women have had devastating and painful side effects because of complications from using Mirena birth control, such as:

*Perforation with Mirena

In quite a few of the cases, there have been women who reported that the Mirena IUD either punctured or perforated the uterus or migrated and became embedded in the wall of the uterus. When this happens, it is sometimes necessary for doctors to perform surgery that carries a great deal of risk to make sure the Mirena IUD is removed. In addition, many women are left with devastating and painful side effects because they have scarring internally, damage to other organs or infection.

*Migration of Mirena

There is a danger that if the IUD does perforate the uterine wall it might migrate to other places in the body and cause serious internal injuries, such as:

*Intestinal Obstruction
*Intestinal Perforation
*Abscesses
*Infection
*Adhesions

Infection with Mirena

Many of the complications that are being found from use of the Mirena IUD can potentially be life-threatening. For women who have never had children but still would like to have them the risk of pelvic infections is particular worrisome.

Removal of Mirena

The Mirena IUD was designed to be safely removed by just applying gentle traction on the treads with forceps. The arms of the IUD have been designed so that they will fold upward as it is pulled out of the uterus. But, in quite a few cases, there have been complications that have required surgery that is more invasive to remove the Mirena IUD. This is especially true if the device is embedded in the uterus or if it has embedded somewhere else. Surgery for removal of the IUD might cause permanent complications including the inability to have babies in the future.

ALL OVER THE COUNTRY MIRENA ATTORNEYS ARE REVIEWING CASES

It has been alleged that Bayer did not research the risk of side effects from Mirena properly before it aggressively marketed the IUD and then it did not warn women or medical doctors adequately about the risk of complications.

Because of the fact that the manufacturer did not give enough information to doctors and women about potential complications, there may be financial compensation available through a lawsuit for product liability.
